What Is A Buoyancy Aid?
- Buoyancy aids are intended to assist competent swimmers in sheltered waters. A personal flotation device (PFD) is something you wear that will keep you afloat should you enter the water. There are different types, but the most common are buoyancy aids and life jackets. The words “life jacket” are often used to describe both buoyancy aids and life jackets, but there is a difference in the level of categorization
- Buoyancy is measured in Newton (N) where 50N offers the lowest level of flotation and 275N the highest level. Level 50 buoyancy/floating aids are designed to keep the wearer afloat, but not to turn a person from a face/down position in the water. This level is ideal for swimmers in sheltered waters or where help is close at hand. However, they do not have sufficient buoyancy to protect a person who is unable to help themselves
