Children’s bikes are sized by wheel diameter rather than frame size, which clears up most of the confusion. As a guide, 14 inch wheels suit roughly three to five years, 16 inch four to six, 18 inch five to seven, 20 inch six to eight, 24 inch eight to eleven, and 26 inch ten and over. Where age and height disagree, trust the height.
Buying a size up to grow into is the most common and most expensive mistake. A bike that is too large is frightening to ride, because the child cannot get a foot down at a stop or reach the brakes. Seated, they should be able to put the balls of both feet on the ground.
Weight is the other thing worth paying for. A bike should not weigh much more than a third of the child’s body weight, and that is where the price difference at a given wheel size shows up.
Most children leave stabilisers between four and six. Once they outgrow the last size, the adult range and the Merida bikes start at 26 inch wheels.
