Founded in 1947 in Annecy, France, as a ski binding manufacturer, Salomon moved into trail running footwear in the 1990s and became the dominant brand in that category. Three core technologies run through the footwear: Contagrip outsole rubber (15+ compounds for different terrain), EnergyCell midsole foam, and Quicklace, a single-pull system used across most models. The X Ultra 4 is Salomon’s most reviewed hiking shoe; the Speedcross (launched 2006) is purpose-built for soft, technical trail running. 

All waterproofed models carry ‘GTX’ in the product name. Both men’s and women’s versions use gender-specific lasts; Salomon does not scale down men’s sizing for women’s feet.
